Why Electrical Tape is a BAD Idea for Irrigation Wiring

Electrical connections are a very important part of any irrigation system.  While electrical tape seems like a watertight alternative, they do not hold up in most damp environments, and certainly not underwater, which is common for many irrigation valve boxes.

The connection made here was the weak link in an otherwise properly operating irrigation system:

Water tight connections should be made with watertight connectors like the King Tight connectors that were used on the left above. They are a dielectric gel-encapsulated – style marrette.

The corrosion was so bad, that it progressed 12” PAST the poor connections – fortunately there was a sufficient quantity of extra wire that was able to be cut out without requiring an additional expensive splice and access box.
